CBEC to be Revamped Ahead of GST Rollout to Curb Tax Evasion

Revamp of CBEC

The Central Government will reinforce Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) due to the impending GST rollout on 1 July. The organization will oversee GST and Customs activities and would be renamed as Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

CBIC will be headed by a Chairman and 6 members who will be responsible for overseeing six different divisions namely – GST, IT, legal and compliance verification, investigation, tax policy, Customs and administration and vigilance.

In order to curb and detect tax evasion, two new agencies would be established under CBEC for business intelligence and analytics. The policy for checking tax evasion would be formulated by The Directorate General of Analytics and Risk Management (DGARM).
