Despite predictions for a heavy monsoon season, farmers are not feeling overjoyed. The GST Council has levied 18% GST rate on pesticides which will add more burden to the farmers’ plight. Crop protection products such as pesticides have become an integral part of pushing green revolution which has played a significant part in boosting agricultural productivity in the country.
In order to enhance food productivity in the face of reducing cultivable land, pesticides have helped extract the maximum out of agricultural land.
Under GST, crop protection has been deemed different from seeds (exempt), fertilisers (12%) and tractors (12%). All these agricultural inputs have been kept separate from crop protection.
